But before we dive into understanding the science, let’s clarify: these medicines are Schedule 4 prescription-only medicines in Australia and require a valid prescription from an Australian-registered doctor.
The Science
These drugs primarily work by slowing the reuptake system that removes dopamine from the brain. Dopamine is the chemical that keeps a person alert and motivated. When this reuptake system is slowed, dopamine stays around longer, keeping you awake.
They also affect other sleep-related pathways in the brain. One is the histamine system, which promotes wakefulness; another is orexin, which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Together, these effects sustain alertness, but the central action is extending dopamine’s presence, not boosting raw intelligence.
Composition
The four brands contain two different active ingredients.
- Modalert and Modvigil contain Modafinil. It is a mix of two slightly different versions of the same drug – the R and S molecules.
- Waklert and Artvigil contain Armodafinil. This is the purified version, containing only the R molecule.
The R molecule has a stronger and longer-lasting effect on dopamine. The S molecule clears from the body faster. Now, a crucial point often overlooked: doctors prescribe these at different strengths. The standard dose of Armodafinil is 150 mg, while Modafinil is typically given at 200 mg. At these therapeutically equivalent doses, Armodafinil still produces about 44% higher blood levels of the active R form later in the day. That’s not because it’s more potent milligram-for-milligram, but because the S molecule in Modafinil is already eliminated. So the real difference between the two active ingredients is a longer arc of action with Armodafinil.

Students: The cognitive enhancement dilemma
Students consider these drugs for long study hours and sharper focus. In sleep-deprived students, studies show Modafinil improves reaction time and logical reasoning. However, in well-rested students, these benefits are weak and inconsistent. This confirms that Modafinil works as a wakefulness-restoring agent rather than a true intelligence booster.
The alertness improvement could partly be matched by a strong coffee, but coffee doesn’t carry the same risk of side effects. Hence, along with taking this medicine when needed, better sleep, strategic caffeine use, and proper study techniques are more sustainable and safer options.
Night Shift workers
For this group, the science gets interesting. During the final hours of a night shift (between 5 AM and 8 AM), alertness is lowest, and error rate is highest. That’s where the drugs’ difference in duration becomes relevant. At prescribed doses, Armodafinil stays effective for up to 9.5 hours, covering a full night shift and the commute home. Modafinil’s shorter window may actually be preferable if you need to sleep soon after your shift.
Thus, for night shifts, the evidence does lean slightly towards Armodafinil-based brands (Waklert, Artvigil) for longer coverage, but only when prescribed and timed correctly.
The truck drivers with heavy responsibility
The principle remains the same. Armodafinil significantly improves driving simulator performance and reduces lane drifting during early morning hours in shift work disorder patients. But these drugs act on your central nervous system and can mask underlying exhaustion. Feeling awake does not guarantee that your reaction time is safe. If you are severely sleep-deprived, your judgement could still be impaired. Everyone responds differently, so any use must be tested under medical supervision before driving. It’s worth noting that a prescription may not automatically shield you from legal scrutiny if an incident occurs.
Side effects
